Safe for kids?

The widespread success of weight loss surgery in recent years has led to a huge uptick in demand. More and more patients who qualify under the NIH standards are exploring weight loss surgery to treat obesity and overcome the myriad health problems that accompany obesity.

While weight loss surgery has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment for adult obesity, there is some debate over whether or not adolescents should be undergoing weight-loss procedures.  New research may put some of those concerns to rest.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding to be safe and effective for adolescents, with patients undergoing gastric banding experiencing significant weight loss.
