Thomas E. Lavin, MD, FACS
The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana; Southern Bariatric Associates

Thomas E. Lavin, MD, graduated cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Miami University in Ohio. He received his MD from the Medical College of Ohio, spent a year in the anesthesia residency program at Emory University, then completed his general surgery residency at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. Dr Lavin is the founder of The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana and Southern Bariatric Associates. The practice consists of five advanced laparoscopic surgeons. Since its inception in 2001, the bariatric surgery program has grown to include four Greater New Orleans area hospitals, drawing patients from all over the country, and offering laparoscopic gastric bypass, BPD/DS, and Lap-Band procedures.

 

Kevin Montgomery, MD
Northwest Weight-Loss Surgery

Kevin Montgomery, MD, graduated from Columbia University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He did his surgical residency and a trauma research fellowship at the University of Washington and is board certified, a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Council for Advances in Bariatrics as well as the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He was a busy general laparoscopic surgeon for 10 years at the Everett Clinic until dedicating his practice to weight-loss surgery in November 2002.

 

JaimePonce, MD, FACS

Dr. Ponce is in private practice at HamiltonMedical Center, in Dalton, Georgia and Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga,Tennessee. He completed a general surgery residency at East Tennessee StateUniversity and has published articles in peerreviewed surgical journals, lectured in different meetings and been a guestspeaker in international congresses and courses. Dr. Ponce has beenpracticing bariatric surgery since 1998 and has extensive experience with thelaparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedure. Hehas been a principal investigator for the FDA “C” trial with the Lap-Band andis actively participating in the FDA Swedish Band trial. He is a consultant forInamed and Ethicon and proctor for the Lap-Band. Since October 2000 developed amultidisciplinary comprehensive bariatric surgical center in Dalton, Georgia,which includes a large experience with outpatient gastric banding procedures.Dr. Ponce was selected member of the AOA, is a fellow of the American Collegeof Surgeons and maintains memberships in the ASBS, IFSO and SAGES.

 

David Provost, MD
Associate Professor of Surgery; University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

David Provost, MD, graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1987. He then completed a general surgery residency at UT Southwestern from 1987 to 1994, followed by a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Provost joined the UT Southwestern faculty as an assistant professor of medicine in 1995. His current interest is in the area of bariatric surgery.

 

Malcolm Kenneth Robinson, MD, FACS
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Harvard University

Malcolm Robinson, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. In addition to his academic appointment, he is also an attending surgeon and director of metabolic support services at Bringham and Women's Hospital, consulting surgeon and physician at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and attending surgeon at Faulkner Hospital. He is currently the director of the program for weight management and metabolic support services in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Robinson received his MD from Harvard Medical School with postgraduate general surgery training at Bringham and Women's Hospital.He then served two years as a research fellow at the laboratories for surgical metabolism and nutrition, followed by one year as a clinical oncology fellow in the American Cancer Society and one year as the assistant to the surgeon-in-chief and Arthur Tracey Cabot Fellow in surgery all at Bringham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Robinson is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Medical Association, Massachusetts and New England Medical Society, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Obesity Association and American Society for Bariatric Surgery. He has served on multiple medical advisory boards at Bringham and Women's Hospital and holds editorial responsibilities at JPEN Journal for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, New England Journal of Medicine, Archives of Surgery, Journal of American College of Surgeons, Journal of Women's Health and Topics in Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Robinson's research interests include: management of short bowel syndrome, metabolic and nutritional management of malnourished and obese patients and mediators of the metabolic response to injury and acute illness. He has received a number of awards and honors for his research including the National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health, Harry Vars Research Award and Maurice Shils Research Award from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Partners in Excellence Award, Bloodstream Infection Reduction Initiative at Brigham and Women's Hospital, as well as the Partners in Excellence Award; Program for Weight Management for Quality Treatment and Service.

 

Felix Spiegel, MD, FACS
Private Practice, Texas Laparoscopy Center

Dr. Felix Spiegel opened a private practice, the Texas Laparoscopy Center, TLC, in Southeast Texas and Houston in 2001. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and fellow of the American College of Surgery. Dr. Spiegel received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Beth Israel Medical Center where he began to perform laparoscopic surgery. He was involved with the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed in New York in 1989. He was among the first surgeons to master this procedure. Now Dr. Felix Spiegel has mastered the LapBand Surgery for obesity. He has had extensive experience in performing this obesity surgery with more than 3,000 successful patients. Dr. Spiegel continues to develop new, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

 

Brad M. Watkins, MD
Northwest Weight-Loss Surgery

After graduating from Western Kentucky University, Brad M. Watkins, MD, received his MD degree from the University of Louisville. His surgical residency in Cincinnati provided extensive training in laparoscopic surgery. He has been in private practice since 1997 doing laparoscopic cases that now number in the thousands. He is board certified, a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Council for Advances in Bariatrics and the Advisory Board for ObesityHelp.com. He moved to the Northwest in 1998 with his wife and twin daughters whereupon he worked at the Everett Clinic until deciding to dedicate his practice to the surgical treatment of obesity in November 2002.

 

George E. Woodman, MD

George E. Woodman, MD, is a general and bariatric surgeon at his private practice, Midwouth Bariatrics, in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Woodman is also the medical director of the Baptist Weight Loss Center and serves as a consultant and proctor for the United States Surgical Corporation (USS). He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society and Tennessee Medical Association. He has published articles and abstracts in the Journal of Trauma, Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, Shock and Archives of Surgery.
