Gastric Band Options - Lap Band & Realize Band

In the U.S., only two manufacturers have received FDA approval for lap band devices. The first was the LAP-BAND system, developed by INAMED Health. This BioEnterics LAP-BAND system of adjustable gastric bands won FDA approval in June of 2001(1). These devices come in two band sizes and two port sizes, maximizing effectiveness, according to the manufacturer. (2)

The REALIZE gastric band, made by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc), is the other AGB device that is approved for use in the U.S., having won FDA approval in 2007.(3) While the makers of the LAP-BAND tout multiple sizes, Ethicon pitches the REALIZE band as more effective by virtue of greater fill volume range and other features.(4)

Each of these two brands of adjustable gastric bands has a proven track record of safety and effectiveness. Each manufacturer goes to some lengths to persuade consumers of the advantages of its product relative to the other, but you're likely to get the best advice by seeking the opinions of doctors you trust.

If you are having AGB surgery in the U.S. today, your doctor will be using either the LAP-BAND or the REALIZE band. Outside of the U.S., several other manufacturers have adjustable gastric bands in regular medical use, though they have not obtained FDA approval at this time.
